Michael W. Smith

Aug 16, 2014
08:15pm – 10:00pm

Michael W. Smith, an award-winning, contemporary Christian artist, will perform his chart-topping hits in Hoover Auditorium.

Due to a high volume of inquiries and interest for this performance, Lakeside is preparing for a sold-out concert. In order to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees, Lakeside appreciates cooperation to make this event a success. Please download important information regarding the show.

His greatest hits, “Above All,” “Open The Eyes of My Heart” and “Place In This World,” have reached the top of both the contemporary Christian and mainstream charts.

At age 5, Smith wrote his first song and later went on to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue a career in the music industry. He started playing keyboard with the group, Higher Ground, and then signed his first songwriting contract with Paragon/Benson Publishing Company.

Smith made his very first album in 1983, titled Michael W. Smith Project. He wrote all of the music, while his wife, Debbie, wrote the lyrics.

Smith’s career skyrocketed after moving to a more contemporary sound.

He has sold more than 13 million albums and recorded 29 No. 1 songs, 12 gold albums and five platinum albums.

Smith is a three-time Grammy Award winner and has earned 40 Dove Awards.

He has a gift for delivering songs that capture the hearts of listeners and gives voice to their thoughts and feelings.

During his three-decade career, the Kenova, W.Va. native has shaped the Christian music landscape with the song “Friends,” which was named the No. 1 Song of All Time by CCM Magazine.

Over the years, Smith has toured with Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman.

The artist has made guest appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Good Morning America,” “Entertainment Tonight” and “Christmas in Washington.”

Smith recently released the album, Sovereign, in May 2014.

When it came time to write and record songs for the new album, Smith decided to enlist the talents of several young songwriters and producers with whom he had not collaborated previously, including Chris York, Seth Moseley and Kyle Lee, who co-wrote the potent anthem “Miracle.”

Smith signed with Capitol Christian Music Group in 2013.

He viewed the move as an opportunity to step into a new creative chapter of his life and to craft a vibrant collection of vertically focused songs with a fresh sense of musical innovation.

In the midst of 22 albums and 10 books, as well as numerous awards, Smith and his wife, Deborah, have been blessed with five children, Ryan, Whitney, Tyler, Emily and Anna.

Lakeside Chautauqua is pleased to welcome Michael W. Smith to Hoover Auditorium on Saturday, Aug. 16.
