Michael W. Smith is a contemporary Christian artist and three-time Grammy Award winner, who charted songs both in contemporary Christian and mainstream charts.
At age 5, Smith wrote his first song and later went on to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue a career in the music industry. He started playing keyboard with the group, Higher Ground, and then signed his first songwriting contract with Paragon/Benson Publishing Company.
Smith made his very first album in 1983, titled Michael W. Smith Project. He wrote all of the music, while his wife, Debbie, wrote the lyrics. The now famous song “Friends” debuted on this album.
Throughout his career, Smith has sold more than 13 million albums and recorded 29 number one hit songs, 14 gold albums and five platinum albums.
In 1991, his hit “Place in this World” hit number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the years, Smith has toured with Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman.
In the midst of 22 albums and 10 books, as well as numerous awards, Smith and his wife have been blessed with five children: Ryan, Whitney, Tyler, Emily and Anna. In recent years, the family has continued to expand as their children are expanding their own families.
In order to provide quality entertainment, speakers, recreational activities and maintenance to our grounds and buildings, Lakeside Chautauqua is a gated community. Guests are required to pay a Chautauqua Pass fee to enter the grounds during the Chautauqua summer season.
