Director David O. Russell brings a captivating, biographical drama to the screen that is inspiring with a few comical quirks.

Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence) is a self-made millionaire who created her own business empire. Being a divorced mother of three children, she invented and patented the Miracle Mop, which she often sold on the Home Shopping Network and QVC.

It wasn’t an easy road to become matriarch of her family, though. A less-than-tolerable relationship with her father, Rudy (Robert De Niro), her mother, Terri (Virginia Madsen) and her half-sister, Peggy (Elisabeth Rohm) make for an interesting battle of ownership.

Joy has to continually argue and defend herself against a manufacturer and a lawyer but still received little to no help. She did everything on her own and that is how she became successful.

The film is a semi-fictional and inspirational portrayal of how Joy overcame personal and professional obstacles to rise to the top. (124 mins)
