Director John Crowley brings a heartfelt, romantic drama to the screen that will make you feel as though you’ve gone back to the 1950s.

An Irish immigrant, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) lands in 1950s Brooklyn, where Father Flood (Hugh Gormley), a priest from her native town, assures she will find a full-time job.

But, the early days are tough. Seasickness is soon replaced by loneliness and homesickness, two feelings Eilis can’t help but feel after leaving behind her widowed mother and her dear sister Rose (Fiona Glascott).

Nevertheless, she manages to find her footing by adapting to her job as a salesgirl, by studying bookkeeping at Brooklyn College, as well as with a little help from both Father Flood and Mrs. Kehoe, the owner of the boarding school she now lives in.

Not only does graduation follow, but love shows its face in Tony (Emory Cohen), an Italian-American plumber, full of adoration and respect for her. They end up marrying, although keeping it a secret.

Tragedy strikes, which incites Eilis to return to Enniscorthy, Ireland in order to share her sorrow. When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. (111 min)
