Director Peter Landesman brings a biographical, sports drama to the screen that is thought-provoking and eye-opening.
Will Smith stars as Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian forensic pathologist who fights against efforts by the National Football League (NFL) to suppress his research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) brain degeneration suffered by professional football players.
Dr. Omalu experiences considerable pressure to back down from his efforts, and County Coroner Cyril Wecht (Albert Brooks) is subjected to a politically motivated prosecution on corruption charges.
The Omalus are forced to leave their dream home outside Pittsburgh and move to Lodi, Calif., where Dr. Omalu takes a job with the San Joaquin County Coroner's Office.
Dr. Omalu is eventually allowed to address an NFL conference on concussions and CTE. Amid growing scrutiny from Congress, the NFL is forced to take the concussion issue more seriously. (123 min)
