Lakeside Symphony Orchestra with Pointe of Departure Ballet

Date

Aug 5, 2017
08:15pm – 10:30pm

Location
Hoover Auditorium

The Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will perform its 17th collaborative concert with Pointe of Departure Ballet Company at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 in Hoover Auditorium. The concert is supported by the Iva. M. Clark Memorial Endowment.

This annual event, which has become a summer favorite among Lakesiders, showcases Pointe of Departure’s world-class dancing and choreography.

Pointe of Departure Ballet Company originated in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998. It is a classical ballet company under the direction of Karen Gabay, former principal dancer of the Cleveland San Jose Ballet who is currently with the San Francisco Ballet.

Pointe of Departure dancers include Gabay, Shaina Leibson, Joe LaChance, David Preciado, and two trainees from the San Francisco Ballet School, Jasmine Jimison and Jacob Seltzer.

Dancers will perform to the “Overture to Act II” from Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the “Wedding pas de deux” from Coppelia by Léo Delibes and the “Pas de deux” from Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus.

For the second half of the program, the music will include “Oh, That Leroy!,” “Fiddle Faddle” and “Irish Suite.” The program will close with a tribute to Disney featuring music from “Mary Poppins,” “The Incredibles” and “Frozen.”

Recently, Gabay was selected as a winning recipient of the Joffrey Ballet's Winning Works Choreography Competition, which was created to recognize talent and emerging ALAANA (African, Latino(a), Asian, Arab and Native American) choreographers and to provide them with a platform to showcase their original and innovative work. Gabay's work, "Hopeful Undertones," premiered in Chicago in 2017 and she continues to choreograph new works for San Fransisco Ballet School and Pointe of Departure.
