After being told to stay away from the issue, the Rev. Dr. Faith Fowler did the opposite and tackled poverty issues head-on in inner city Detroit.
She will bring her ministry experience to the pulpit as she serves as Preacher of the Week from Aug. 13-17, beginning with her 10:30 a.m. Hoover Community Worship Service on Sunday, Aug. 13 in Hoover Auditorium. Her sermon, "When the Son of Man Comes," is based on Matthew 25:31-46.
Author of This Far by Faith: Twenty Years at Cass Community and the soon-to-be-published Tiny Homes in a Big City, the Rev. Dr. Fowler writes to raise money for her cause of bringing food, healthcare and jobs to those in the inner city.
As pastor of Cass Community United Methodist Church (UMC) in Detroit, the Rev. Dr. Fowler also serves as the Executive Director of Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) and has held both of these positions since 1994.
CCSS is a nonprofit agency that responds to poverty in the community with programs for food, healthcare, housing and employment. Through this organization, the Rev. Dr. Fowler achieves her mission of providing the people of Detroit with hope and opportunity.
The Rev. Dr. Fowler graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Albion College. From there, she went on to receive a Master of Divinity from the Boston University School of Theology, as well as a Master of Public Administrations from the University of Michigan – Dearborn. She currently holds an adjunct professor position at the University of Michigan – Dearborn.
She has also served as a board member for the Cass Corridor Neighborhood Development Corporation, an advisory board member of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and a board member and trustee for the General Board of Church and Society. She is currently a trustee for Albion College.
During her week at Lakeside, the Rev. Dr. Fowler will preach at 9:15 a.m. Monday-Thursday during Faith for Living Hour in Orchestra Hall.
At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, she will lead Vespers by the Lake, held on the Pavilion East Deck.
