Lakeside Ohio

This summer, Lakeside Chautauqua will host gardening enthusiasts from across the Midwest for a premiere event, titled Lakeside in Bloom, from Saturday, June 27-Tuesday, June 30.

Dedicated to horticulture and the continued beautification of its historic Victorian community, Lakeside Chautauqua is home to Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile, holds a 2012 America in Bloom national award and participated in the 2013 International Communities in Bloom competition.

During this four-day event, Lakeside Chautauqua will offer lifelong learning opportunities through lectures, workshops, cultural arts performances and a self-guided Garden Tour, showcasing private and community gardens on the grounds.

The keynote speakers include Hope Taft, former First Lady of Ohio, and Guy Denny, former Chief of Natural Areas & Preserves for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The focus of their lecture on Sunday, June 28, titled ‘Painting Ohio in Broad Brushstrokes,’ will be the vision, construction and upkeep of the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Gardens in Columbus, Ohio.

Following their presentation, on Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30, Lakeside will welcome award-winning English garden designer, Amanda Patton, who will present four lectures on ‘Gardening as Landscape Painting: Toward a New Naturalism.’ She will explore the creation of naturalistic planting schemes for both environmental and aesthetic perspectives.

In addition, registrants of Lakeside in Bloom are invited to take part in a Sunset Dinner Cruise aboard the Goodtime II Sunday, June 28, which will showcase a different perspective of Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile and the Lake Erie islands from the water.

On Monday, June 29, all are invited to take a self-guided Garden Tour around the Chautauqua community. Registrants will be given a map of the winning gardens to explore at their own pace.

Garden enthusiasts will have the opportunity to participate in gardening demonstrations with Corso's from 8:30-10 a.m. Monday, June 29 on the pedestrian walkway along Walnut Avenue, between Second and Third Streets.
