Lakeside will open the 137th Chautauqua summer season with a dedication of the new Steinway grand concert piano and performance by Steinway artist Richard Glazier.
After 30 years of service, Lakeside has officially retired the Baldwin piano, built in 1934 and a centerpiece of the Hoover experience since the 1970s. The five-year-old Steinway was acquired thanks to the persistence of Lakesider Don Eckert, a professional piano technician who located the piano and negotiated the purchase at a significantly reduced cost. The purchase of the piano was made possible through the Lakeside Fund, in particular, a generous gift from long-time Lakesiders Dick and Dorothea Hartley, as well as through the sponsorship of Steinway piano keys. The piano will be used for nightly entertainment at Hoover Auditorium, including the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, and for Sunday morning Hoover Worship Services. Nearly 80 sponsors will be honored prior to Glazier’s performance.
Glazier, an accomplished Steinway artist, will perform a program titled “A History of the American Popular Song,” a musical tour of the 20th century. Glazier has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from Indiana State University and a doctorate of musical arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has won several major international piano competitions, including the Pro Musicis Award and the National Federation of Music Clubs Grand Prize, and performed all over the world. In his programs, Glazier combines stories, film clips, and piano performances to evoke the golden age of the American popular song. For his performance at Hoover Auditorium, Glazier will incorporate information about the Steinway in his program.
