Now in its fourth decade, New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) has become America’s pre-eminent Gilbert & Sullivan repertory company. The Wand’ring Minstrels, the company’s “all-purpose Gilbert & Sullivan ensemble,” featuring leading NYGASP performers, will stage an abridged production of “Pirates of Penzance,” at Hoover Auditorium, followed by a concert of Gilbert & Sullivan favorites.

Started as a street theater in 1974, NYGASP solidified its reputation as a serious player on the New York cultural scene in 1979, when it hired its first orchestra. The company began touring nationally in 1981, performing regularly at prestigious venues such as the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts near Washington, D.C.

NYGASP was founded by Albert Bergeret, who remains the company’s artistic director and general manager. Called “the leading custodian of the G&S classics,” by New York magazine, Bergeret has sung, conducted, directed or designed every opera in the Gilbert & Sullivan canon. He is a resident stage director with the New York Grand Opera and appears frequently as a singer with the Wand’ring Minstrels.
