Grammy Award winners Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel have performed, recorded and toured together for 25 years. Now the duo brings their unique combination of acoustic fingerstyle guitar and melodic woodwinds to Lakeside.
Tingstad grew up in Seattle, Wash. and played electric guitar in rock bands. While attending Western Washington University, he became interested in classical and jazz guitar techniques and traded his electric guitar in for an acoustic guitar. In 2007, he received a Grammy Award nomination for his solo album, “Southwest.”
Rumbel, an oboist, grew up in San Antonio, Tex. and attended Northwestern University, where she developed an interest in ethnomusicology. She explored non-traditional and improvisational music, eventually moving to Florida and joining the Paul Winter Consort. In 1984, she left the group to start a family, moving to the Seattle area in 1985.
Tingstad and Rumbel first met at an outdoor festival in Oregon in 1984. They began collaborating a year later, culminating in their first album, “The Gift,” a collection of acoustic holiday music that remains a best-seller today. In 2003, the duo received a Grammy Award for their album, “Acoustic Garden.” The album featured a limited edition plantable CD cover, made from recycled cotton with wildflower seeds that would sprout when watered.
In 2008, they released their 19th album, “Leap of Faith.” Their performance at Lakeside will include selections from the album and old favorites, as well as unrecorded songs. They will also perform arrangements of standards from the “American Songbook,” such as “Summertime” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
