This band writes, plays and sings about people, places and historic events. Hey Mavis is based out of the Cuyahoga National Valley Park area where they practice, write and record amidst the beauty of nature. Their songs depict the human condition with lyrics and music that are soulful, haunting and mischievous. The band’s members come from different backgrounds but unite under the common ground and desire to redefine the boundaries of old-time and modern folk music.
Lakesider Ed Caner (Steve McGillicuty) has been labeled by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as “one of the most versatile musicians on the planet.” He has performed for more than 50 major acts, including Smokey Robinson, Page and Planet, Natalie Cole, Luciano Pavarotti and Ray Price. His talent is uniting with the talents of Hey Mavis.
The duo, Hey Mavis, is composed of Sara Benn (Mavis Peachtree) ad Tootsie “National” Parker. Benn was raised in Pecos, Texas, and in her teens given a bass by her father. He taught her to play and to this day she enjoys writing and performing orchestral music.
Parker was the first recipient of the Cuyahoga Valley Distinguished Songwriter Award given to a songwriter who best depicts the emotions and life of a historical character in a canal-era music style. She is a prolific songwriter and professional metalworker among various other traits.
