Annual Light Up Lakeside Weekend Inspires Illumination

The Annual Light Up Lakeside Weekend will be held Aug. 6-9. This highly anticipated event, put together through the efforts of the Lakeside community, celebrates the last days of summer by showcasing the entire community in lights.

The idea of lantern illumination originated from the Grand Illumination Night on Martha's Vineyard, held one evening in August for only a few hours. Porches and balconies are decorated with Chinese lanterns, a tradition that dates back more than a century. This tradition has since migrated to Lakeside.

All Lakeside guests are encouraged to take part in this celebration by decorating their properties with lights. Everyone is invited to be creative in the types of lighting used, such as Christmas lights, candles, luminaries and lanterns.

Judging will take place on Saturday, Aug. 7 after the Hoover performance. In the case of inclement weather, judging will take place on Sunday, Aug. 8 at dusk. Awards will be given for Most Creative Overall, Most Colorful, Best Display of White Lights, Best Use of Luminaries, Best Campground Display and Best Business Display.

Not only will cottages, campers and local businesses be adorned with colorful, lanterns, lights and luminaries, but the Lakeside Candlelight Symphony Showcase will conclude the weekend celebration on Monday, Aug. 9. Tickets for the Symphony Showcase are available for purchase at the Hoover Ticket Office for $35 each.
