The Hotel Lakeside has a new suite thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Friends of Hotel Lakeside and Lakeside Association. On Memorial Day weekend, the Barbara Lane Memorial Suite was opened to the public. It serves as the centerpiece of the Hotel’s 135th anniversary celebration this summer.
Barbara Lane passed away in January 2009. She is most notably remembered as one of the primary driving forces of the Friends of Hotel Lakeside, an organization which saved the hotel from demolition nearly 40 years ago. Lakeside Association’s President/CEO Kevin Sibbring said of Lane, "Her commitment, dedication and love of Hotel Lakeside served as an inspiration for the community."
Lane’s family has lived in Lakeside for several generations. She had been very involved with Lakeside throughout her life, working and volunteering for the Association. She enjoyed telling the lifeguards that guarding at the waterfront was her favorite job during her youth. After her passing, George McCormick, president of the Friends of Hotel Lakeside organization, approached the Lakeside Association to discuss creating a suite in her memory.
Three rooms on the second floor that had not been updated since the 1950s were selected for the renovation. In the fall of 2009, the Lakeside Association partnered with the Friends of Hotel Lakeside to begin the project. They worked with the Arcus Group for the architectural design and Prete Construction for the physical remodeling. The Eastlake Style furnishings were procured from antique dealers across the country. Upholstered window treatments were designed by Young’s Floor Coverings and Draperies.
Costing $249 per night on weekends and $219 per night on weeknights, the Barbara Lane Memorial Suite consists of four unique spaces: a bedroom, kitchen, sitting room and a bathroom. The suite includes a spacious bedroom with an intricately carved antique king-size bed, other newly acquired antiques and artwork, hardwood floors, kitchenette completely furnished with dishes and flatware, sleeper sofa and a northwest view of Lake Erie.
Since its grand opening, the suite has been consistently booked. Wendy Eller, Lakeside Association’s vice president of Operations said the guests have ranged from first-time Lakeside visitors to frequent guests of the hotel. All have been complimentary of the space. Even friends of Lane have visited the suite.
"It is our greatest hope that this new suite offers a fitting tribute to the tireless efforts of the Friends of Hotel Lakeside organization," Eller said. "We are most grateful to this special group for their service and partnership with the Lakeside Association."
