CLSC Graduates to be Honored

The Lakeside Chapter of the Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle (CLSC) will hold its second graduation celebration in 111 years at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 26 in Chautauqua Hall.

The theme for this year’s graduation is “Truth and Consequences.”

Several members of the CLSC will read brief quotations on the nature of truth and consequences from a variety of different sources.

The graduation celebration will honor two members of the Lakeside CLSC, Dolly Andler and Sandi O’Dell, who, after graduating in previous years, have moved on to the next level of achievement in the CLSC, the Guild of the Seven Seals. To qualify for initiation into the Guild of the Seven Seals, a CLSC member must read 14 additional books beyond the 12 needed for graduation.

Both honorees will offer words of encouragement reflecting their experiences in the CLSC. The invocation will be delivered by the Rev. Dr. Irwin Jennings. Brief remarks on the nature of the CLSC and the Guild of the Seven Seals will be made by Paul Sukys, the master of ceremonies for the graduation celebration. Music will be provided by Mary Jones on the dulcimer. Refreshments will be served after the conclusion of the celebration.

The goal of all members of the CLSC is to read 12 works from an approved list of books that extends back to the year 1878. Those who complete this task are honored as official graduates.

The New York Chautauqua Institution CLSC was formed in 1878 to support reading and learning about nature, art, literature, philosophy and science. The New York chapter provides a reading list each year, from which the local membership chooses two books to read during the off season for discussion at the round table sessions each summer.
