Merchant Survey Brings Two New Business to Downtown Lakeside

As a result of a merchant survey, The Fine Print bookstore and the 2nd Street Market have opened their doors for 2011. The Lakeside Association Board of Directors’ Enterprise Committee conducted a season long survey in 2009 among 1,100 Lakeside residents and seasonal guests.

The purpose of the survey was to gage how well Lakeside businesses were serving 21st century guest expectations. Separate categories measured results for food vendors and retail stores among adults and youth. The results indicated the need for additional businesses, including renovating the Lakeside Laundromat, reinstating the Hotel Lakeside dining room, and enlarging Artists-N-Cahoots retail space. All of these businesses opened in the 2010 summer season to meet Lakesiders’ requests.

In further response to the survey, The Fine Print bookstore and the 2nd Street Market opened Memorial Day weekend. Bev Bartczak and Joan Price are co-owners of The Fine Print, located on the corner of Second Street and Walnut Avenue. The two women met while teaching special education in Eaton, Ohio, and have been friends for more than 30 years. The bookstore offers a wide range of books for both adults and youth. It features books chosen by several Lakeside book clubs and book review groups, as well as books related to Lakeside’s weekly educational themes.

Bartczak added, “We have also included a section that reflects our love of travel. Of course, we carry best sellers, favorite summer reads and some periodicals.”

Students at Danbury High School have played an integral role in choosing titles for the Young Adult section of the bookstore. Juniors and seniors have made recommendations of their favorite books, as well as reviewing advanced copies of new Young Adult titles.

“We don’t have anything to base success off of because we have never done this before, but there has been a lot of traffic in the store,” Bartczak said.

A new Preschool Story Hour will be held at the bookstore at 3 p.m. on Thursdays beginning June 23. The young readers program will also be available to Lakesiders at the end of June. Both programs will be in conjunction with Lakeside’s “Where in the World?” children’s program.

The Fine Print store hours are 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. on Monday-Saturday, and Sunday at 12-8:30 p.m.

The 2nd Street Market now occupies the newly remodeled storefront connected to the Lakeside Laundromat. The business is co-owned by mother and daughter, Susan Henderson and Stephanie Carter respectively. Their family has been visiting Lakeside for more than 20 years.

The market is stocked with basic essentials, including bread, butter, milk, eggs, produce, toiletries and cleaning supplies, among other traveling necessities.

Signature specialties are fresh cut steaks and chops, homemade pies (strawberry, peanut butter, blueberry), strawberry jam and homemade cinnamon rolls. A deli counter features sliced meat and cheese and salads.

“So far, we have sold a little of everything,” Henderson said.

Tom Hilty, member of the Lakeside Association Board of Directors’ Enterprise Committee, said, “Based on the survey response from the community, the 2nd Street Market is exactly what was missing in the business district.”

The market’s store hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Monday-Saturday, and 12-6 p.m. on Sunday.
