Pickleball Emerging in the Lakeside Community

Pickleball, a game that is part-tennis, part-table tennis and part-badminton, has become a trending sport in Lakeside Chautauqua.

Linda and Paul Ruttencutter learned to play at their local park in Florida. When they came to Lakeside, the Ruttencutters met Kate Stepleton, who also plays Pickleball.

In the summer of 2011, the Ruttencutters and the Stepletons decided to buy equipment to setup Pickleball in Central Park.

“My family, my husband and I really enjoy playing down there [in Central Park], and it is quite a competition,” Linda said.

The equipment includes wood paddles, plastic balls (comparable to whiffle balls) and nets.

Anyone can check-out the equipment at the miniature golf hut.

The court lines are painted in white on the basketball court across from the miniature golf hut.

Pickleball is a sport that is easy to learn and attracts players of all ages. It does not require much skill nor does it wear-and-tear ones muscles or shoulders.

“Everytime I’ve passed the Pickleball court this year, someone has been down there playing it,” said Ruttencutter. “It’s gotten a lot busier, and I’ve seen kids playing with adults, so that makes me happy.”

The Ruttencutters, Tony and Carolyn Apostos, along with eight others, also paid to have the Pickleball court lines painted on the single tennis court in Perry Park.

“I’m hoping that maybe someday, we can have a [Pickleball] court down there [in Central Park] with some fencing around it,” said Ruttencutter.
