Lakeside Chautauqua has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to urban forestry. The awards ceremony, recognizing Lakeside and other communities, was held on May 9 in Rockford, Ohio.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a non-profit, environmental and educational organization of more than one million members with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.
"We all benefit when communities like Lakeside place a high priority on planting and caring for trees, one of our nation's most beautiful resources," said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees shade our homes, add beauty to our neighborhoods and provide many environmental, economic and social benefits. We applaud Lakeside's officials, volunteers and citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest."
Tree City USA communities must have a tree board, tree care ordinance, community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Communities that earn Tree City USA recognition have not only taken the time to meet the four standards, but have also recognized that trees promote healthier communities by filtering the air by removing dust and other particles.
The trees moderate climate, conserve water and provide vital habitat for wildlife. Tree City USA also recognizes the communities’ efforts to reduce the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings. Reducing energy use and increasing property values are other benefits.
The Lakeside Tree Advisory Team was established in 2010.
The Annual Arbor Day Picnic was initiated by LESS in 2010. The first Arbor Day Proclamation was published in the Lakesider newspaper in 2011.
Lakeside Chautauqua would like to thank Bill Smith, the Tree Advisory Team and the Lakeside Environmental Stewardship Society (LESS) for their time and efforts in earning the Tree City USA designation.
Their commitment to the Lakeside Chautauqua community and promoting environmental awareness to residents and guests is truly appreciated.
