Upholding the Religion Pillar: A Look at the 2011 Chaplains

Lakeside’s vision states that it is “a Chautauqua community dedicated to Christian values and cultural excellence, nurturing mind, body and spirit.” The question that often follows is, “What is a Chautauqua?”

Lakeside is part of the Chautauqua Movement, which flourished during the 19th and 20th centuries. It is considered to be one of the greatest revival movements in American history. Lakeside is built upon the four pillars of Chautauqua: religion, education, cultural arts and recreation.

The religion pillar is reflected in Lakeside’s many Chautauqua programs and activities, including Teen Ministries, God Squad, Evening Praise, Middle Grade Ministries, Sunday Worship Celebrations and the Chaplain of the Week.
Supporting the religion pillar is the Religious Life Advisory Team. This group of laity and clergy advise the Lakeside Association staff regarding the varied programs within the religion pillar.

The process of securing the Chaplains of the Week is most important. Throughout the year, Lakeside welcomes suggestions from all people. These suggestions are then pulled together and made available to the Religious Advisory Team. The team narrows the list down to the highest priority choices, and then the Director of Religious Life offers invitations. In order to secure the best speakers, Lakeside works on a two-year outline, and is now inviting Chaplains of the Week for 2012.

Next year’s inspiring group of chaplains includes:
Memorial Day Weekend: May 29, 2011: The Rev. Valerie Stultz, District Superintendent, Canal District, Akron, OH

Labor Day Weekend: Sept. 4, 2011: West Ohio Conference Bishop

Another important aspect of the religion pillar is maintaining church relations by speaking to several congregations during the off-season. This is an opportunity while “filling the pulpit” to share the Lakeside experience.

Lakeside is also exploring the possibilities of programming short-term pastors’ schools, youth leader training and spiritual formation events.

Following Labor Day, the Director of Religious Life is available to speak for worship, retreats, prayer groups and other gatherings. Contact Dr. Roger Smith at (866) 952-5374, ext. 294 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
