The Lakeside Heritage Society, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Lakeside and the Marblehead Peninsula. The society’s museum, archives and educational programs are supported through membership dues, donations and proceeds from annual benefit sales, books and special projects.
As part of the summer activities, the Lakeside Heritage Society offers free historic walking tours of the Lakeside grounds. In addition, informative excursions of South, Middle and East Lakeside are available. Special tours may be arranged by calling Heritage Hall at 419.798.5519. Free Sunday afternoon programs are offered at 2 pm in the Fountain Inn Green Room.
Built in 1875, the Lakeside Chapel served for 25 years as part of a three-point circuit with Christy Chapel and Catawba Island. In 1900, the Lakeside Methodist congregation purchased a brick building on the corner of Central Avenue and Fifth Street. From 1900-1952, the Chapel became known as Ladies’ Aid Hall. During the fire of 1929, the brick church burned and the congregation held their services at Orchestra Hall until 1952 when the present church was completed. The Lakeside Association then purchased Ladies’ Aid Hall and renamed it Fellowship Hall. In 1968, the Lakeside Heritage Club, Inc. (now the Lakeside Heritage Society, Inc.) formed to save the building from destruction. This historic structure now serves as a museum.
Lakeside’s unique history is preserved and exhibited at Heritage Hall Museum. Displays include artifacts, records, photographs, antiques and memorabilia from the Lakeside Chautauqua experience, Lakeside & Marblehead Railroad, the boats of Lakeside, the Carroll Brother’s Stores, the Lakeside Church, and many other special collections.
