On The Water

Sailing & Swimming 

FREE swimming lessons are held Monday-Friday for all ages from 9:30-10 a.m. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Located at the Pavilion beach area, Sailing Center staff members are on duty to help with sailboat rentals, storage and launching of private sailboats and sailing lesson.  Sailing lessons are offered on a weekly basis.  Two courses are taught by the staff.
 The Sailing Center offers weekly lessons for $75 per person. Daily lessons are $30 per hour. Minimum age for class participation is 10.

Sunfish and kayak rentals are available at $25 for the first hour and $15 for each additional hour.

Lakeside Sailing Club Beginners Course Objectives:

Acquire the basic sailing skills handle a small sailboat, emphasis on the development of self- reliance and safety.  Identify and describe the function of the equipment, parts of the sailboat, wind direction and points of sail. 

Demonstrate:

  • Demonstrate safe conduct while in or around a sailboat
  • Capsize recovery of a small sailboat and for rescue of a person overboard
  • Rigging, de-rigging, care and storage of sails and equipment
  • Techniques when sailing along an established course 

This course will cover:

  • Rigging and de-rigging of the Sunfish
  • Sailing doublehanded, progressing towards single-handed
  • The five basic Right-of-Way Rules
  • Points of Sail in relation to wind direction
  • Sailing both a windward/leeward and triangular course

  
 Lakeside Sailing Club Intermediate Course Objectives:

To enhance pre-established sailing knowledge through an emphasis “on water” sailing. 

This course will cover:

  • Rigging and de-rigging of the Sunfish
  • Sailing singlehanded
  • The five basic Right-of-Way Rules
  • Points of Sail in relation to wind direction
  • Sailing on a rectangular or triangular course

Sailing Adventures

All Lakeside kids ages 5-10 are invited for a FREE sailing adventure.  The Lakeside Sailing Club and the S.O.S. members are offering free Sunfish sailboat rides on Sunday from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.  All participants must be able to swim and have parents sign a liability waiver.  Come join us for some fun.  Contact The Sailing Club at 419-798-4461, ext. 266.  Limited instructional rides are available for youngsters ages 11-14.  Contact coordinator Bill Maenner at 419-798-8834 or stop by at 308 Maple Ave. for details.  For weekly certified sailing instruction is available through the Sailing Club for ages 10 and up. 

S.O.S.

The Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) was founded in 1991 by 26 family members.  Our mission is to provide the resources for a safe, enjoyable and comfortable Sailing Club with a commitment toward continuous improvement.  One of the membership benefits is the free use of the Sunfish and Lasers in the S.O.S. fleet.  More…
