To open its 55th season, the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present "Home Movies" under the direction of guest conductor John Gordon Ross. A reception will be held immediately following the concert to celebrate and meet the musicians.

This opening concert, titled "Home Movies," will feature the "Waltz from Sleeping Beauty," "Letters from Home" by Aaron Copeland, and selections from Fiddler on the Roof, "The Wizard of Oz" and selections from "Star Trek."

Established in 1963, the LSO is one of Lakeside’s most cherished traditions. Bringing classical music to the Chautauqua community, the orchestra performs seven concerts during its month-long residency.

The LSO is made up of more than 90 musicians from across the country that have devoted many years of service to Lakeside.

Ross is serving as Interim Music Director of the LSO this season. He has been the 2nd Trombonist for the orchestra since 1978 and is grateful to Lakeside as the place where he met his wife of 37 years, Sarah Rocco Ross, who has also performed with the LSO for more than 40 years.

He recently retired from serving as conductor of the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory, N.C. since 1991. Ross is a faculty member at Lenoir-Rhyne University where he teaches music history and instrumental conducting.

Ross will lead the first Symphony Pre-Concert Talk of the summer at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 in Hoover Auditorium. Each talk gives the audience an opportunity to learn more about the evening’s concert music, composers and guest conductor.

This season, he will also conduct the LSO performance with Verb Ballets on Saturday, Aug. 4.
