The Opioid Crisis with Sam Quinones

 Monday, June 25, 2018
10:30am-3:00pm
Hoover Auditorium

As a part of the Week 2 Chautauqua Lecture Series theme "The Opioid Crisis," Sam Quinones, author of Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic, will provide two lectures at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 25 in Lakeside Chautauqua's Hoover Auditorium. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Sam Quinones is a Los Angeles-based freelance journalist and author, and was formerly a reporter with the L.A. Times, where he spent 10 years writing about immigration, gangs, drug trafficking and the U.S.-Mexico border.

Dreamland recounts twin stories of drug marketing in the 21st century. A pharmaceutical corporation flogs its legal new opiate prescription painkiller as non-addictive. Meanwhile, immigrants from a small town in Nayarit, Mexico devise a method for retailing black-tar heroin like pizza in the U.S., and take that system nationwide, riding a wave of addiction to prescription pills from coast to coast. The collision of those two forces has led to America's deadliest drug scourge in modern times.

Dreamland won a National Book Critics Circle Award for the Best Nonfiction Book of 2015. It was also selected as one of the Best Books of 2015 by Amazon, Slate, the Daily Beast, Buzzfeed, Seattle Times, Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Entertainment Weekly, Audible, and in the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Business by Nobel prize winner, Professor Sir Angus Deaton of Princeton University.

Quinones’ other books of narrative non-fiction are True Tales from Another Mexico: The Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino and the Bronx and Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration.
