World Affairs Dialogue

 Friday, June 22, 2018
3:00pm-4:00pm
Chautauqua Hall

The intent of the Lakeside Weekly World Affairs Dialogue is to present thoughtful discussion on a current issue affecting the US and other nations. Attendees are encouraged to study the topic in advance and come prepared with ideas, suggestions and facts. The session is not a political forum and while opinions are welcome, we encourage participants to present factual statements in support of their opinions. Above all, respect to all participants is expected.

On Friday, June 22, we will discuss the plight of hungry, tired, homeless, stateless people trudging wearily throughout the world. Images of their plight haunt us from headlines and screens every day. In this week’s session, we will identify different groups and their international rights. Questions for research include:

  • What is a refugee?
  • What is a political asylum seeker?
  • What is a migrant?
  • What is an illegal immigrant?

What can and is being done to help these people? We take a quick look at the billions of dollars being spent by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for assistance, and ask the question, does humanitarian aid really help anyone? Please visit http://www.unhcr.org to study the topic.

Moderating this discussion is Victoria Ashley. If you have suggestions or questions about the Dialogue, please contact the Education Department at education@lakesideohio.com or 419-798-4461 ext. 239.
