What are sanctions and why might they be a useful diplomatic tool? This Friday, August 10, moderator Victoria Ashley will present a discussion of various types of sanctions and why they may be used by a country or other entity to enact certain behaviors from another country. We will discuss how our country and the UN and EU use sanctions against countries and individuals.

The US Treasury Department, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) administers and enforces economic sanctions programs primarily against countries and groups of individuals. The sanctions can be either comprehensive or selective, using the blocking of assets and trade restrictions to accomplish foreign policy and national security goals.
