World Affairs Dialogue

 Friday, August 31, 2018
3:00pm-4:00pm

Each Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., the World Affairs Dialogue presents an opportunity for thoughtful discussion on international events and ongoing world issues. The dialogue is held to promote further learning about world affairs and is not a political forum. Advance reading materials are suggested and attendees are encouraged to study the issue in advance and come prepared to participate in discussion with ideas, on-topic commentary and expertise.

This Friday, Aug. 31, moderator Victoria Ashley will begin with a short feedback session on this season’s World Affairs Dialogue. We would like to know what you liked about this format and if there are topics you would like addressed in the future. If you have participated in one or more Friday sessions, please come and share your thoughts!

Then, we would like participants to share personal experiences about one or more of the following:

  • Why knowledge and understanding of global events are important to you
  • Your most pressing global “hot topic”
  • An international leader you admire, living or historic
  • An international/cultural experience you had
  • Passport to _____? Where will you travel in the next few months? Have your travel plans been influenced in any way by a discussion we’ve had?

We learn from each other, so please share your thoughts and experiences, as much as you are comfortable.

All 2018 World Affairs Dialogue topics and suggested weekly readings/links have been compiled into one document and it is available by email request to education@lakesideohio.com.

Wish to continue the Dialogue? As our Chautauqua season draws to a close, Cleveland/Northeast Ohio residents may be interested in forum-style events sponsored by The Cleveland Council on World Affairs. The Speaker Series has two tracks of programming, the Foreign Policy Forum and the Global Dialogue Forum. The Foreign Policy Forum includes think tank and academic experts, government officials and current/former diplomats in discussion on relevant and timely geopolitical topics ranging from foreign policy to world economics and current global issues. The Global Dialogue Forum addresses the most pressing social and humanitarian issues including refugee assistance, education and global food security. Check the CCWA calendar offerings here: http://www.ccwa.org/programs/speaker-series/

CCWA also offers career nights, citizen hosting opportunities and other events of interest to the international community. If you are not in the northeast Ohio area, check to see if there may be an affiliate Council on World Affairs or similar university group in your city, offering programming.

Another interesting and fun website is http://www.clevelandpeople.com/about.htm. Here you will find information about different events, fairs, lectures and ethnic groups all over the NEO area.

Thank you very much to all who have participated! Please join us in Chautauqua Hall this Friday at 3 p.m. If you have already left us for the season or are unable to attend, please feel free to contact the Education Department at education@lakesideohio.com with your feedback.

Early in 2019, view the calendar at www.lakesideohio.com/calendar to see next summer's events.
