The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker
99th Annual Lutheran Chautauqua Week

Lakeside welcomes The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at the General Theological Seminary in New York, as Preacher of the Week from June 16-21, during the 99th Annual Lutheran Chautauqua Week.

A Bible scholar, ordained United Methodist minister and a creative teacher, the Rev. Dr. Parker will bring her passion for the Bible to this week of scriptural discovery.

She will preach at the 10:30 a.m. Hoover Community Worship Service on Sunday, June 16. Her sermon, "Someone in the Background," turns attention to a little-known character in 2 Kings 5:1-14 and shares a story from one of the most harrowing experiences in the Rev. Dr. Parker's own life. Her sermon proposes that the biblical text and anguish of our own lives can lead us to words and deeds of compassion.

The Rev. Dr. Parker has taught at several institutions, including Yale Divinity School, Fordham University and New York Theological Seminary, with a program teaching students incarcerated in Sing Sing Correctional Facility.

Prior to her position at General Theological Seminary, the Rev. Dr. Parker taught at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus where she founded the Trinity Prison Project.

She holds a doctorate in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from Yale University and has degrees from Hamilton College, Union Theological Seminary and Yale Divinity School. During her education, she spent a year in Paris studying art history and lived in Central America for six months studying liberation theology.

The Rev. Dr. Parker is ordained in the United Methodist Church and worked full-time in ministry prior to her doctoral studies, first at a congregation and then as a university chaplain.

During her week at Lakeside, the Rev. Dr. Parker will preach at 9 a.m. Monday-Friday during Faith for Living Hour in Hoover Auditorium. At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, she will share meditation at Vespers by the Lake, held on the Pavilion East Deck.

For those who wish to attend worship, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained between 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday, valid until 3 p.m. A complimentary Faith for Living Hour Pass is available from 8:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday; valid until 1:30 p.m. Both of these passes include admission for guests and auto, but not admittance to the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus.
