He's the recipient of numerous scholastic fellowships and awards, including being named “one of 20 outstanding black ministers under the age of 40 who are helping shape the future direction of the church” by the African-American Pulpit in 2008. He was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College in 2014, honoring his ethical and spiritual leadership.

The Rev. Dr. Powery is a published author and editor. His three books include Spirit Speech: Lament and Celebration in Preaching; Dem Dry Bones: Preaching, Death, and Hope; and most recently, Rise Up, Shepherd! Advent Reflections on the Spirituals.
