Lakeside Chautauqua is pleased to welcome Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, resident bishop of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC), to lead the 10:30 a.m. Hoover Community Worship Service on Sunday, Sept. 1.

His sermon, titled "Christian Hospitality," is based on Hebrews 132:1-18; 15:16; and Luke 14:1,7-14. The church is always on the journey of being a community of genuine Christ like hospitality. That journey involves wrestling with what it means to be both a good guest and a generous host. As always, Jesus has an idea or two to guide us on this journey.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bishop Palmer is “a child of the church,” the son of the Rev. Herbert E. and Charlotte Sue Hewitt Palmer. His father is a retired United Methodist pastor.

Bishop Palmer received his undergraduate degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University Divinity School.

Baldwin Wallace University, Iowa Wesleyan College and Simpson College have awarded him honorary degrees.

Bishop Palmer was ordained as a deacon and probationary member in the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church in 1977. He was later ordained an elder in full connection in 1981. He became the Resident Bishop of the Ohio West Area of the UMC in 2012.

His career includes pastorates at several UMCs. He also served as District Superintendent of the Youngstown District.

In 2000, he was elected to the episcopacy by the North Central Jurisdictional Conference. He was then assigned to the Iowa Area, where he served churches as a pastor until assuming responsibilities in the Illinois Area in 2008.

Bishop Palmer and his wife, Cynthia, are the parents of two grown children.

For those who wish to attend the Hoover Community Worship Service, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 3 p.m. The pass includes admittance for guests and auto.
