The Rev. Dr. Lillian Daniel will serve as Lakeside’s Preacher of the Week from Aug 1-5. This week is supported by the Rev. Dr. Ned & Shirley DeWire Endowment.

She will preach at the Chautauqua Community Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1 in Hoover Auditorium.

The Rev. Dr. Lillian Daniel is a preacher, teacher, writer, and speaker whose honesty and wit have taken her from the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. to the Festival of Homiletics in Denmark.

In her most recent book, “Tired of Apologizing for a Church I Don’t Belong to: Spirituality without Stereotypes, Religion without Ranting,” Dr. Daniel urges open-minded Christians to explore ways to talk about their faith journeys that are reasonable, rigorous, and real.

Her earlier offering, “When Spiritual But Religious Is Not Enough: Seeing God in Surprising Places, Even the Church,” Dr. Daniel invites all of us to step out of ourselves, dare to become a community, and encounter a God greater than we could ever invent. She is an editor for The Christian Century magazine, and a contributing editor for many more.

She has taught preaching at the University of Chicago Divinity School, Chicago Theological Seminary, and Yale Divinity School, where she received the 2010 distinguished alumni award for Distinction in Congregational Ministry.

Equally comfortable in convention centers, classrooms, lecture halls and church pulpits, Dr. Daniel has spoken at Duke Chapel, Princeton Seminary King’s College London, and Queen’s University Ontario. On Sundays, you can find her preaching at First Congregational Church in Dubuque, Iowa, where she serves as Senior Minister.

During her week at Lakeside, the Rev. Dr. Lillian Daniel will preach at 9 a.m. Monday-Thursday during Faith for Living Hour at the Steele Memorial Bandstand. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4 she will lead Vespers by the Lake, held at the Steele Memorial Bandstand. Please note: Vespers by the Lake has been moved to Wednesday of this week. On Thursday, Aug. 6, the Rev. Karen B. Graham will lead the 7:30 p.m. Vespers with Holy Communion at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.

Please practice safe social distancing. If unable to socially distance, masks are required. While some seating is provided in Bettinger Park, guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be presented live via Lakeside’s virtual platforms on the website and Facebook.
