Sacred art and the use of the visual arts in worship is an ongoing interest as Pastor Frohner co-authored the book “The Exchange: Thoughts on Faith, Art, Science and Culture,” with acclaimed artist Brian Whelan.

His past speaking engagements include being an inspirational speaker at Zumapalooza 2017, a technology conference in Las Vegas where he spoke on what it means to see opportunities where others see only obstacles.

At 7p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, he will lead Vespers by the Lake at the Steele Memorial Bandstand. On Thursday, Aug. 12, the Rev. Karen B. Graham will lead the 7 p.m. Vespers with Holy Communion at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.

Vespers moves to 7 p.m. this week for the remainder of the summer. Please practice safe social distancing. If unable to socially distance, masks are required. While some seating is provided in Bettinger Park, guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be presented live via Lakeside’s virtual platforms on the website and Facebook.

Rev. Jeff Frohner will be preaching this week on Heretics and Heresy: Conflict in the Early Church.

In 1985 John Cougar Mellencamp released his “Scarecrow” album which included the song, “You’ve got to stand for somethi’n.” The refrain repeats, “You’ve got to stand for somethi’n or you’ll fall for anything.” And so it was for the early church that seemed to struggle against a dizzying array of heresy and false teachers.

The New Testament is filled with references that seem to be only partially veiled assaults on various schools of thought and downright polemical confrontation between those who are seen as ‘antichrist’ and false teachers.

Who were these heretics? Where did they come from? Was the threat they represented one of false belief or of a direct challenge to the recognized power and authority structure of the church? And how if at all do their beliefs continue to be manifest in the modern church today?

We invite you to join Pastor Jeff Frohner this week during our Faith for Living hours as he leads a discussion on heretics and heresy in the early church.
