The Lakeside Heritage Society is pleased to invite you to the ribbon cutting and Grand Opening of our new archives building in the downtown Lakeside Plaza District at 210 Walnut St., Lakeside, Ohio on Thursday, May 20th at 2 p.m.

The Lakeside Heritage Society purchased the building to provide a climate-controlled building for our growing archives collection and to increase public accessibility to these valuable historical records. This one-story brick building was constructed in 1953-54 as “Weber’s” to replace a 1906 wood-frame building around the corner on Second Street that had served as a combined newsstand, gift shop, drug store and soda fountain. The new building served as a general store under different names through six owners (most recently as the Shade Tree) until it was purchased by the Lakeside Heritage Society in 2020.

The Lakeside Heritage Society was founded in 1968 with the mission to preserve, promote and advance the history of Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula, and the American Chautauqua Movement. LHS operates the Heritage Hall Museum and has stored our archives collection in the Caldwell House at 324 W. Third Street for the past 21 year. The Society has been raising money and looking for a suitable climate-controlled building for our archives collection for the past 10 years.

Kathy Venema, President of the Lakeside Heritage Society, and Gretchen Curtis, local historian who has researched the history of the building, are available for interviews.
