Black Composers: A Forgotten Legacy

 Monday, June 28, 2021
3:00pm-4:30pm
Orchestra Hall

Music by African-American composers and musicians has long held pride of place in the genres of Spirituals, Jazz, and Blues. But recent explorations into the history of American music have revealed their activity in the areas of band, chamber, choral and symphonic music as well. Our study, however, begins much further back in time, beyond our borders, to composers of Color such as “Le Mozart Noir” in early 18th century France, a Priest in the early 19th century Brazil, and several 20th century composers in England. On our own shores, we will survey a select list of names both familiar and unknown, right up to our own times, and provide samples of their music.

The presentation is a lecture with pre-recorded examples.

M.J. Albacete, Presenter

M.J. Albacete comes to Lakeside with a life-experience in the arts. Travel around the Mediterranean Sea for two years in the US Navy provided opportunities to visit historic sites and great museums abroad. He has his BA from Walsh College (now Walsh University), and an MA from Akron University. MJ joined the staff of the Canton Museum of Art in 1975, was soon elevated to Associate Director, and in 1988, to the Executive Directorship. In that role, his involvement in many arts projects resulted in lecture programs throughout Ohio and other locations, for several years as a member of the Ohio Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. Early in his museum career, MJ bonded with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, based on his passion for concert music. Across the span of 35 years, he has provided many music lectures for the CSO, and is presently creating a series of music lectures for their Website. For five years he reviewed their concerts for the Canton Repository, at the same time providing record and CD reviews for FANFARE magazine. His “Unknown Wagner” lecture has been presented to Wagner Societies in Canton, New York, and Boston. Now in retirement, MJ continues to teach at Kent State University Stark Campus as an Adjunct Professor (over 35 years) on the History of Architecture.
