U.S. Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry C. Black

U.S. Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry C. Black will serve as guest preacher at the Hoover Community Worship Service over the holiday weekend.

The names of those buried in the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park, and those who have died during the 2017-2018 year, will be read aloud during the service.  

In addition to this service, the Pavilion East Deck will hold an 8:30 a.m. Dockside Worship Service with Eucharist, led by the Rev. Irwin Jennings. The Lakeside United Methodist Church will also hold a service, led by the Rev. Vernon Shepherd, at 9 a.m.    

For those who wish to attend worship, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained between 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 3 p.m. The pass includes admission to Lakeside for guests and auto, but not access to the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus.  

In addition to leading the Hoover Community Worship Service, Dr. Black will reflect on his senate chaplaincy at 1 p.m. in the Hotel Lakeside Fern Room. 

Dr. Black is currently the 62nd Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. Prior to chaplaincy on Capitol Hill, he served in the U.S. Navy for more than 27 years, ending his distinguished career as the Chief of Navy Chaplains.

He is a native of Baltimore, Md., and an alumnus of Oakwood College, Andrews University, North Carolina Central University, Palmer Theological Seminary, Salve Regina University and Alliant International University. In addition to earning his Master of Arts degrees in divinity, counseling and management, he received a doctorate degree in ministry and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in psychology.

In 2006, Dr. Black authored his autobiography, From the Hood to the Hill, and in 2011 he published The Blessing of Adversity
