COVID-19 has impacted our community in significant ways. Lakeside has made difficult decisions to reduce expenses. One such decision was to reduce the number of seasonal staff hired. Due to this considerable decrease in staff, a variety of tasks across Lakeside potentially will not get done. Volunteering is how you can help.

Lakeside Chautauqua Volunteer Corps

The Lakeside Chautauqua Volunteer Corps, a new initiative organized by the Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation Board, is an opportunity for Lakesiders of all ages to help fill the gap of decreased labor in Lakeside by volunteering across the grounds and programming.

Many Lakesiders already volunteer, and we deeply appreciate all of their hard work and dedication to maintain and enhance our special community. Now, we’re looking for additional passionate and dedicated Lakesiders to step up and join them as part of the Lakeside Chautauqua Volunteer Corps.

Your important commitment will make a huge difference. By committing your time, you will help reduce costs, complete important tasks and give back to your community.

Who should volunteer?

Whether you volunteer with your friends, family, spouse or individually, the Lakeside Chautauqua Volunteer Corps is a great opportunity for anyone and everyone who loves Lakeside.

Tell us a little bit about your interests and the areas at Lakeside you’re most passionate about, and we’ll place you in a volunteer opportunity that’s the right fit for you.

Certain volunteer opportunities are more popular than others, so please be flexible in the areas at Lakeside you are willing to help maintain and improve.

Families can adopt a garden in their neighborhood; couples can volunteer for an activity that is close to their hearts; individuals can assist with the Farmers’ Market; and more. All volunteer opportunities will implement social distancing and put your health and safety first.

Continue to check as more opportunities are added throughout the summer.

Where can you help?

Lakeside has more than 30 gardens for residents and visitors to enjoy. The volunteers who braved the rain and got dirty knees this spring helped revive and beautify the gardens after the winter. You can help keep the gardens beautiful this summer by volunteering to do basic tasks such as weekly weeding and deadheading. You can also take on the responsibility of caring for a specific garden bed or area. It could be a neighborhood effort or a great family project.

Potential grounds and gardens where you can help: Bettinger Park, Perry Park, Cherry Park, Chautauqua Park, Gundlach Garden, Schoolhouse area, parking area, Shuffleboard garden, Second Street garden, Steele Memorial Bandstand area, Kenton Row, Firefighter Park garden, pool area, miniature golf, and many more.

Lakefront Team

Lakeside’s Dock serves as an iconic and beloved structure in our community. As you know, the Dock is used by residents and guests of all ages as it is a wonderful place to fish, swim, walk, chat and watch the sunset and sunrise. After Lakeside’s frequent storms, the Dock and waterfront area have to be cleaned. As a Lakefront Team volunteer, every few days you and fellow volunteers would sweep, rake and pick up debris to get things back in order.

Grounds & Maintenance

If you enjoy doing handiwork, join the Lakeside Chautauqua Volunteer Corps. Lakeside has expansive grounds and parks that need regular lawn care. As maintenance will be stretched thin this summer due to COVID-19, your commitment to help the Grounds & Maintenance team would be greatly appreciated. Lakeside also owns many historic buildings and structures that need ongoing maintenance and care.

Farmers’ Market

In a continued effort to promote health and wellness, Lakeside hosts a bi-weekly Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday until Labor Day weekend. This season, the Farmers’ Market will take place in the greenspace by the Lakeside Schoolhouse. As a volunteer at the Farmers’ Market, you would complete tasks such as assisting with set up and tear down and enforcing social distancing among customers.

Steele Memorial Bandstand

The Steele Memorial Bandstand has been a community gathering place for decades and continues to be a special space for open-air concerts, author visits, vespers, planned marriage proposals and a variety of family celebrations. This season, the Steele Memorial Bandstand will be a vital outdoor space for events, worship services and other programs. As a volunteer at this location, you would be an usher, assist with crowd control, help to sanitize and complete any other necessary duties.

Special Events & Programs

While this will not be a traditional season, Lakeside will host every event and program we can under the COVID-19 associated regulations and mandates. As a volunteer for special events and programs, you would help at events such as Family Picnics and Middle Grade Madness (MGM).

Hotel Lakeside

Built in 1875, Hotel Lakeside is a notable National Historic Landmark located along the shores of Lake Erie. The hotel is reminiscent of the Victorian era, featuring a beautiful wrap-around porch showcasing the best views of the islands and 79 unique rooms with antique furnishings. As a volunteer at Hotel Lakeside, you would assist with tasks such as sanitizing, dusting and cleaning the front porch.

Throughout the year, volunteer photographers are needed to take pictures of special events in the community. If interested in volunteering your time and providing your photos, contact
