Posted on July 28, 2010

Hotel Lakeside will celebrate its 135th anniversary at the 32nd Annual Friends of Hotel Lakeside Ice Cream Social. The Ice Cream Social will be held from 2:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1 on the lawn of Hotel Lakeside.

Tickets for the Ice Cream Social are $5 for adults and $3 for children and include a serving of cake and ice cream, and a beverage. Tickets will be available at the Hoover Ticket Office and on the lawn of Hotel Lakeside on the day of the event. The afternoon will include carriage rides in the Pavilion Circle, children’s games on the West Pavilion Deck, clowns from the North Olmstead United Methodist Church and music provided by the Genoa American Legion Band. Following the Ice Cream Social, guests may enjoy a performance by magician Rusty Ammerman at 6 p.m. at Steele Memorial Bandstand in Central Park. The 135th anniversary of Hotel Lakeside will be commemorated during the Ice Cream Social with a dedication by Lakeside President/CEO Kevin Sibbring and Friends of Hotel Lakeside President George McCormick at 3:15 p.m. on the hotel lawn. The dedication will feature a special cake made by Lakeside Leadership Academy intern Merritt Ramicone. The 135th anniversary of Hotel Lakeside will also be celebrated at a dinner on Saturday, Aug. 7 in Wesley Lodge. The evening will start with appetizers at 5:30 p.m. and continue with dinner at 6 p.m. A short program will begin at 6:45 p.m., featuring longtime friends of Hotel Lakeside and past employees, as well as McCormick, Sibbring and Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation Chairman Randy Snow. Guests who donate $135 to Friends of Hotel Lakeside will be invited. To donate and attend the dinner, contact group sales at The Friends of Hotel Lakeside are also selling tickets for two opportunity drawings: an original watercolor painting and a quilt. Tickets for the drawings are $1 each or $5 for six, and are available for purchase at Hotel Lakeside, where the painting and quilt are on display. The drawing will be held at the Chautauqua Season Closing Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 5. Ticket holders need not be present to win. The painting is by Lakesider Robert Bruce, an architect and native of Columbus, Ohio. Bruce has been coming to Lakeside since 1974 and has worked on 37 cottages in Lakeside. He has entered artwork in the Katharine C. Crampton Memorial Art Show since 1975. Currently, he teaches classes at the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts and has artwork for sale at Artists-N-Cahoots and The Patio Restaurant. Bruce donated his painting, valued at $400, to the Friends of Hotel Lakeside for the drawing. The quilt was pieced by Lakesider Nancy Bouldin and quilted by Sandy Erwin of Catawba Island. The fabric was donated by Lakesider Ellie West. West said tickets for the quilt opportunity are selling well. "We’re on track for a record year." West and Bouldin have worked with other Lakesiders on quilts for the Friends of Hotel Lakeside for several years. This year, Bouldin pieced the quilt solo because the pattern, called the garden trellis, was more complicated than in previous years. Proceeds from the Ice Cream Social, dinner and opportunity drawings will support the continued preservation and maintenance of Hotel Lakeside. Special thanks to UNew Tent Rental for donating the use of the tent for the Ice Cream Social.
