2011 Educational Seminars Announced

This year, the Education Department will host more than 200 educational seminars. Popular theme weeks, like Civil War Week, will return, while new topics will be introduced to enlighten the mind.

Annual favorite theme weeks, include Health & Wellness Week (July 5-8), Environmental Stewardship Week (July 18-22), Vearl Smith Memorial Historic Preservation Workshop (July 29) and Civil War Week (Aug. 22-16). On Monday, Aug. 22, during Civil War Week, Lakesiders will have the opportunity to dine with President and Mrs. Lincoln at Hotel Lakeside (extra cost event). Robert and Mary Brugler of Columbus, Ohio, will portray Abraham and Mary Lincoln, and entertainment will be provided by Civil War musician Bobby Horton. Information for making advance dinner reservations will be available after May 1. Attendees are invited to wear Civil War attire to the dinner.

There are a variety of returning seminar series, such as Lakeside Heritage Society lectures, Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation Financial Planning + Generosity seminars, Lakeside Women’s Club programs and book reviews, LESS Environmental seminars, Herb Study programs and Symphony Pre-Concert Talks. A new seminar series will be introduced this year. On select Friday mornings during the summer season, Lakeside will present an Intergenerational Learning seminar. These seminars are designed for all ages and explore a variety of nature, history and playful topics in an relaxed and interactive environment.

New themes will be offered, including Ohio History in Architecture (June 21-23), Faith and Foreign Policy in the United States (June 27-28) and Challenges of Forgiveness (July 11-14). Senior Venture Week (Aug. 28-Sept. 1) will feature Noteworthy Ohioans, those who made contributions to history in politics, military service, business, science, the arts, social reform and sports.  During this theme week, seminars will pertain to the influences of the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, Annie Oakley, Jesse Owens and Woody Hayes, among others.

The Lakeside Women’s Club and Lakeside Association will host the Lakeside Quilt Show in Hoover Auditorium Lobby from June 18-July 9. There will be two educational seminars on Monday, June 20 related to quilting. Stay tuned for more information on how to showcase your own quilt at the exhibit in Hoover.
