Ottawa County’s Only Movie Theater Receives Major Upgrades

Posted on May 06, 2011

Ottawa County’s only movie theater, located in Lakeside’s downtown business district, recently received major upgrades to enhance the movie experience. Area residents may attend two special preview weekend screenings of “The King’s Speech,” staring Academy Award-winner Colin Firth, at 8 p.m. on May 13-14 and “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, at 8 p.m. on May 20-21. There is no gate pass admission to enter the Lakeside gates for the two preview weekends. Special preview movie ticket prices are $5 for adults and youth.

Orchestra Hall has been entertaining movie-goers for more than 90 years. Major upgrades in the Orchestra Hall movie theater include a rebuild of the movie projector, purchase of a new movie screen and installation of Dolby Stereo Sound. As a non-profit institution, Lakeside Association would not have been able to fund the upgrades without the support of community members who donated to the Lakeside Fund, an annual giving campaign.

Lakeside worked with a consultant from Full Aperture Systems, James Bond. Movie equipment was sent from Chicago and the movie projectors were fully rebuilt. Bond, along with Lakeside volunteer, Bill Shannon, and Lakeside Orchestra Hall Manager, Richard Thomas, replaced projector components, ran speaker cable and installed the Dolby Stereo Sound with three large speakers positioned behind the screen for optimal sound experience.

Bond stated, “The new sound system will rock Orchestra Hall. Guests will be amazed at the clarity of the sound.”

To enhance the overall movie viewing experience, a new custom-made movie screen was delivered to Lakeside in March. The crew mounted the new screen on casters, which allows the screen to move forward to the front edge of the stage for movies, and back to the rear of the stage for other programs and presentations.

Orchestra Hall will officially open for the summer season Memorial Day weekend with “Rio.” This animated children’s movie with an all-star cast will be shown at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 27, and 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on May 28-29. Movie tickets are $6/adult and $3/youth (under 12). To view upcoming movies for the season, visit
