Sloopy's Sports Cafe Wins Pizza Pizzazz Awards

Posted on March 08, 2012

Congratulations to the owners of Sloopy's Sports Cafe, Brad Corbin and Matt Mangan, who placed first in the Gourmet and Traditional divisions at the 2012 Pizza Pizzazz competition.

The contest was held at the North American Pizza and Ice Cream Show at the Columbus Convention Center in January. This year, the Pizza Pizzazz competition welcomed 100 contestants from 11 states to test their creativity.

During the two-day event, the contestants bake first-round pizzas and six finalists are chosen. Those six pies are prepared again and judged the following day and the top three finishers are announced.

Inspired by the Japanese food at the Nagoya, Corbin entered a Hibachi pizza in the Gourmet division. The first prize pizza was topped with chicken, shrimp, carrots, broccoli and fried rice. A Gourmet pie must have a specialty red sauce, white sauce, pesto or specialty sauce (i.e., barbeque, taco, seafood, Asian, Greek) and any combination of ingredients.

Mangan received top honors in the Traditional division for his meatball supreme pizza that featured gorgonzola and mozzarella cheeses, Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms and meatballs.  A Traditional pizza is defined as having a red sauce and any combination of the following ingredients: cheese, pepperoni, sausage, ham, meatball, hamburger, salami, mushroom, peppers, onion, tomato, olives or anchovies.

Both won $6,000 in cash and prizes. Congratulations to Sloopy's Sports Cafe for receiving top honors at this year's competition.
