Cross Country Team Returns to Lakeside for 9th Annual Summer Camp

An annual tradition, the Louisville High School Men’s Cross Country Team in Ohio plans to host their ninth summer running camp at Lakeside Chautauqua in August 2013.

Louisville’s coach, Bob Sudomir, has been coming to Lakeside every year since he was six months old. When he took over as the team’s head coach nine years ago, he knew Lakeside Chautauqua was the perfect destination for the team’s week-long summer running camp.

“Lakeside offers a big change in scenery and surroundings for these high school students,” Sudomir said. “Not only that, but Lakeside is a safe and fun place. It’s the perfect environment to build camaraderie and a positive team culture. It allows for individual and team growth, in addition to the recreational opportunities.”

Each year, the team stays in the Erie Guest House on the corner of Maple Avenue and Second Street. Sudomir explained, “It’s the perfect accommodations for a team. It’s a place where we can all be together but still be so close to the exciting things going on in the community.”

During their time at Lakeside, the team especially enjoys eating at The Patio Restaurant and Sloopy’s Sports Cafe, spending time on the dock, practicing for their annual shuffleboard tournament and playing miniature golf.

The runners also value their interactions with the Lakeside Chautauqua community.

“Lakesiders have been so welcoming and supportive of the team,” said Sudomir. “There are so many people over the years that have been instrumental in the success of the camp.”

Sudomir mentioned Dick Elsasser and Jim Meyer, both retired cross country coaches, as an example. “These two men have been so great about sharing their wisdom and knowledge about the sport with the team. The students really appreciate hearing from them.”

Lakeside Chautauqua is not just another camp location. Even more than that, Sudomir explains, “Lakeside is an experience that the team will always remember.” After winning the state championship two years ago he asked his runners to reflect on their fondest memories.

One student said, “The best part about the entire season, including the championship meet, was our time together at Lakeside.”

Lakeside Chautauqua has and continues to make a lasting impression on high school students and teams. We look forward to welcoming the Louisville Men’s Cross Country Team back this season.
