Lakeside Chautauqua Announces Freda Krauss’ Retirement

Posted on August 21, 2013

Lakeside Chautauqua celebrates with gratitude the work of summer resident Freda Krauss, a familiar face at Lakeside Chautauqua for more than 15 years, who is “retiring” from the community at the end of this season.

In recent years, she has been seen volunteering at Artists-N-Cahoots, serving as organist at daily Chaplain’s Hours, as keyboardist at Sunday Dockside Services, as well as ushering for Sunday Hoover Community Worship Services and volunteering weeknights as a Hoover greeter.

Her favorite part about volunteering in the Chautauqua community is the people of Lakeside. She enjoys learning the stories of Lakesiders and working alongside them.

“I especially love to ask people how they heard about Lakeside,” Krauss said. “You hear so many interesting stories.”

After retiring from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Krauss came to Lakeside in 1997 to work at Cokesbury Bookstore until 2009.

“Who would have thought that one day I would be part of the Lakeside crew?” Krauss mused.

In 1972, her four children sang in the Singing Angels Choir at Hoover Auditorium.

“Although people recalled their first performance for their music, they were also remembered for their little brother who had a full leg brace,” she said.

Krauss represented her church, The Church of the Cross United Methodist Church in Lexington, Ohio, as a lay member of the East Ohio Annual Conference. In 2008, she served as a librarian in Africa with Mercy Ships, a global charity that has operated hospital ships in developing nations.

Krauss also donated her time at the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona working in the visitors’ center, giving talks about the history of the park, taking photos and working at the museum.

She plans to reside in Arizona yearround. Krauss, born near Mount Gilead, Ohio, graduated from Malone University in Canton, Ohio.

Lakeside Chautauqua would like to thank Freda Krauss for all her hard work and commitment to the community and Chautauqua programs over the years.
