"Two years ago, Rebecca Stevens persuaded her parents to try a summer vacation destination that was all the rage-when Theodore Roosevelt was president.

Since then, Ms. Stevens's family has returned regularly to the Chautauqua Institution, a cross between an arts colony and a resort in western New York, where they spend their days enjoying poetry readings, sailing excursions and symphony performances. "It's like having an opportunity to go back to college," says Ms. Stevens, 26, a Chicago resident and aspiring playwright.

Having sparked one of the most significant educational movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Chautauqua (pronounced shuh-TOK-wa) phenomenon is making a comeback, with the dozen-plus current sites attracting more than a million people last year." Read more...
