Lakeside Collects Food for Danbury Food Pantry

Posted on June 03, 2015

Lakeside will collect non-perishable food and toiletry items throughout this summer to help support the local Danbury Food Pantry.

Guests and residents can help with this initiative by donating canned goods, toiletry items and non-perishable food throughout the summer.

The leader of the Danbury Food Pantry, Jan Hirt, shared, “The food pantry serves 47 to 50 families per month and is open every third Saturday of each month.  The food pantry is located at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Church Road.”

“Toward the end of the month, Danbury Food Pantry works with the local grocery stores to purchase missing items that volunteers know families will need for the month,” added Hirt.  The purchases are made through generous donations given to the Danbury Food Pantry.

Guests and residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable items that are left over after their Lakeside Chautauqua visit or pick up a few items from the list when running to the grocery store. The drop-off location is Hoover Auditorium front porch and lobby.

Important items that are always needed include:

  • Canned meat, fish or fruits and vegetables:  Tuna, chicken, stew, chili, salmon or corned beef are always needed by families.
  • Soup:  Soup is easy to store and keep at the pantry.  It also provides much needed nutritional value.
  • Pasta:  Boxed pasta is also popular and can help make a perfect meal.
  • Milk Products:  Picking up powdered milk, boxed puddings or cheese and cracker spreads will help provide calcium.
  • Grain Products: brown rice and whole wheat pasta are a good choice.
  • Baby Food:  Infant Formula and Baby food can be expensive and is a good donation.
  • Non-food items:  Don’t forget that non-food items are also needed including deodorant, soap, shampoo, toilet tissue, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, cleaning supplies and diapers.

Lakeside will be counting the number of items collected throughout the summer and an update will be provided about the quantity of items collected in support of the food pantry.
