Lakeside Summer Sailstice Program takes place June 19

Posted on June 03, 2015

The Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) and the Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) will hold the 5th Annual Lakeside Summer Sailstice on Friday, June 19. All Lakeside boaters are invited to participate.

The Summer Sailstice is the global initiative that calls upon all sailors to mark the beginning of the summer sailing season. It also reminds people about the need to preserve the waterways for future generations.

The Lakeside Summer Sailstice program has grown steadily – from just a handful of boats to nearly 10 sailboats last year with full crews.  This year, all types of boats are invited to participate:  large sailbots, small sailboats, powerboats, kayaks and canoes.

Speaker and Potluck Dinner

Prior to the Lakeside Summer Sailstice, Lakesiders are invited to attend a lecture, presented by Dr. Kristen Devanna-Fussell, senior research scientist at OSU’s Stone Laboratory. She will be discussing the health of Lake Erie and her research on introduced species in Lake Erie.  The lecture will take place from 5-6:45 p.m. at Gravel Bar Yacht Club, located at 8565 Gravel Bar Blvd., Marblehead, Ohio at Bar Harbor Marina.

Immediately following the lecture, Lakesiders will gather for a potluck before participating in the Lakeside Summer Sailstice.

Blessing of the Fleet

One of the highlights of the Lakeside Summer Sailstice has been the blessing of the fleet by the Rev. Dr. Irwin Jennings.

This year, Dr. Jennings will stand at the end of the Lakeside dock and bless each boat and crew as they pass.

The blessing of the fleet will begin at 7:30-8 p.m. Sailboats and powerboats are invited to participate.

Sunset Cruises

After the blessing of the fleet, many boaters will head out into open waters to watch the sunset on nearly the longest day of the year at approximately 9:11 p.m. Actually, June 21 is the official Summer Solstice, and the longest day of the year.

If you don’t have a boat, you can catch a ride with one of the many boaters who will be participating in the Lakeside Summer Sailstice program.   Let one of boaters know at the Potluck.

There is no denying the splendor of Lakeside and Lake Erie at this time of year.  Let’s appreciate the beauty of Lake Erie and learn more about how to help conserve this wonderful resource.
