Repair of the Shoreline will Continue into 2017

Posted on February 18, 2016

Last year, Lakeside suffered the misfortune of being directly in the path of four major sustained windstorms that resulted in record surf and significant damage to the community.

The storms have taken a toll on our waterfront, shoreline and dock. They ripped through Lakeside, taking cast iron benches from their bolted spaces, washing away the foundation from underneath the splash pad, devastating sections of the shoreline, stirring up trash and debris from the lake, and pulling trees and plants from their roots.

As we enter February, Lakeside’s evaluation of the shoreline continues. Dan Dudley, Lakeside Chautauqua CFO and COO, and Dave Geyer, Vice President of Municipal Services, have been working closely with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Office of Coastal Management and BEC Engineering to complete survey work.

There are historical surveys that show the shoreline significantly farther south from where it is today. Therefore, there is a retroactive portion of our permit application that will somewhat complicate and delay the approval process. Additionally, given the high lake levels over the past couple of seasons, we are in a queue behind numerous other projects that are dealing with more precarious threats than our situation.

In the meantime, the eastern and western shorelines have both been surveyed. It was determined that the rock along the eastern shoreline will need to be higher and back fill will need to be added.

The repair of the shoreline is not an easy project and will require many steps to complete. Therefore, repair work could take up to 24 months to be completed.

Lakeside still faces significant repairs and shoreline restoration costs. Join other generous Lakesiders, and give a gift to the Lakeside Fund to support storm repairs.
