WOW Sailing Classes

Posted on April 10, 2017

Women on Water (WOW) will once again offer beginner and intermediate sailing classes for women age 25 and older. Each session includes five days of instruction and is certified through U.S. Sailing. Instructor Celeste Cook Williams is a long-time veteran and teacher of the Lakeside sailing program.

Beginner instruction (Level I) will take place Monday, June 17-Friday, June 21, and intermediate instruction (Level II) will be held Monday, Aug. 5-Friday, Aug. 9. All classes are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, followed by on-the-water instruction from 2-3:30 p.m.

The goal of Level I is to give the sailor confidence through understanding the points of sail, rigging, coming about and jibing, knot tying and following a set course on a lateen dinghy (Sunfish) sailboat.

At the beginning of this class, there will be basic swimming and treading water tests, along with life jacket exercises. Before a student sails on a Sunfish sailboat without an instructor, they will be taught the skills to right the sailboat by themselves.

The goal of Level II is to obtain experience and confidence on a very sea worthy sloop (18’ Typhoon) in open water and to do so with full command of the sailboat.

Level II participants should already have the above basic sailing skills, either through sailing classes or commensurate sailing experience.

The cost for either session is $95, which includes instruction for five days and a sailing instruction workbook.

Class space is limited. To register, contact the Lakeside Information Center at or (419) 798-4461, ext. 266.
